Description
Objective
The international and interdisciplinary seminar «Urban Emergencies: Human-Made Ecologies in the Face of Change», side event of 18th International DOCOMOMO Conference 2024, aims to bring together experts and professionals from various fields, including urban planning and architecture, botany and soil studies, to discuss, analyse and propose innovative and sustainable solutions to contemporary urban challenges, focusing on three axes related to climate change: soil, urban vegetation and sustainable urbanism. This event seeks to foster an exchange of knowledge and experiences on the sustainable management of urban land, the integration and role of vegetation in mitigating and adapting to climate change, and the principles of sustainable urbanism that promote resilient and liveable cities. Through debates, workshops, and presentations, the aim is to generate a collaborative platform that promotes implementing resilient and sustainable strategies in our cities.
Main topics of the seminar
• Sustainable Management of Urban Land: Strategies and practices for the conservation and improvement of urban land, its role in mitigating climate change, and methods for the responsible use of this vital resource.
• Urban Vegetation and Climate Change: The role of green areas in adapting and mitigating climate change, designing and maintaining urban parks and gardens, and policies for protecting and expanding vegetation in cities.
• Sustainable Urban Planning: Analysis of the principles and practices of urban planning that promotes sustainability, resilience and habitability in contemporary cities, with particular attention to the impacts of climate change.
• Urban Ecosystem Services: Evaluation and valuation of the services that urban ecosystems provide, including climate regulation, air quality improvement, water management and urban biodiversity.
• Urban Resilience: Strategies for adaptation and mitigation of the effects of climate change in urban environments, planning for natural disasters and the promotion of resilient urban communities.
